The Friends of the Lake District (FOLD) are a registered charity and membership organisation dedicated to Lake District and Cumbrian landscapes. They are one of the partnership organisations that make up Fix the Fells.
Since 2011 FOLD have organised their very popular ‘fell care days’, mass-volunteering practical conservation and learning events which bring together local communities, schools and volunteers from many different walks of life. The days are open to anyone with an interest in helping look after the Lake District’s beautiful landscapes and countryside.
The days typically involve FOLD coordinating a number of different organisations to offer hands on practical outdoor volunteer activities and focus on reconnecting people with the landscape by raising awareness of the immense value of uplands in providing diverse and unique habitats; food and fuel; clean water; flood control; jobs; locking up carbon in peat soils; opportunities for recreation and improving our health and well-being to name but a few.
The tasks on the day can range from litter picking or surveys of wildlife, rhododendron removal from woodlands or drystone walling, right up to upland path creation and maintenance. The days focus on being inclusive, fun and rewarding and always feature a good supply of cake to keep the energy levels up!
