Borrowdale Fell Care Day

Fix The Fells | Latest News | Borrowdale Fell Care Day

The Flora of the Fells team at Friends of the Lake Districtare busy planning another large scale volunteering ‘Fell Care Day’ in Borrowdale on Thursday 17th October. The aim of the day is not only to undertake lots of practical conservation work in the fells but also to raise awareness about the huge amount of work which volunteers undertake throughout the year in the Lake District andCumbria.

There’ll be a range of practical tasks which both new and experienced volunteers can join in; with something to suit all levels of fitness, including high fells path works with the Fix the Fells teams, path works with the National Trust and Lake District National Park staff, dry stone walling and woodland work or helping local schools undertake education and conservation tasks.

Fell Care Days are friendly affairs – volunteers book onto the task of their choice, sign in to the Rosthwaite ‘hub’ at the start of the day then set off in small groups under the guidance of skilled leaders before returning at the end of the day for tea and lots of cake.

It’s not only a great opportunity to have a go at volunteering but also a fantastic way to experience the inspiring Borrowdale valley in the company of people who manage the land; learning something about the landscape and its management in the process.

Last year’s Fell Care Days at Ullswater and Windermere involved 240 adult volunteers, 7 schools and 251 children, achieving 275 days’ worth of work in the fells in just 2 days.

The Fell Care Days are supported by the National Trust and the Lake District National Park Communities Fund. If you’d like to take part too just email sue-m@fld.org.uk to be added to the emailing list to receive the list of tasks you can choose from, or phone 01539 720788. We recommend you book your place as tasks get filled up quickly - although we will have something that you can turn up and join in on the day – but you’ll need suitable all weather outdoor gear, strong boots and a picnic lunch.
